About

I strive to re-imagine higher education as a space that centers writing studies pedagogy, community, disability justice, and the belief that education is a practice for building critical consciousness.

Hello, I'm Reina!

My educational background in American Studies has helped me to possess and apply critical thinking and cultural analysis skills in a variety of disciplines including history, rhetoric, literature, education, disability studies, and more. Combining my robust interdisciplinary education with over 5 years of work experience in customer service and program assistance, I’ve developed a wide and thorough range of transferable skills, including project management, educational technology support, and research analysis.

Writing Studies & Pedagogy

within the large field that is rhetoric and composition studies, writing studies and writing studies pedagogy are the areas in which i find myself most connected to. the way that these fields value both research and teaching pedagogies aligns with my own practice of intertwining my studies as a student with the research i pursue and the teaching i engage in the classroom.

Disability Justice

informed by my own experiences with non-apparent disabilities and the works of disability justice scholars, i’ve come to value disability justice as a core tenet of my academic and professional identity. especially considering that disabled people have been systemically excluded from educational spaces, centering disability justice is critical to my purpose and approach as a student and scholar.

Critical University Studies

informed by critical theory, critical university studies aims to analyze the university as an institution worthy of critique, especially in the ways in which it reinforces structural and cultural systems of oppression. studying the university is an interest of mine because i believe that it’s necessary in order for the higher education experience to be most meaningful and safe for all.

Education Studies

the works of scholars dedicated to a critical approach to teaching have motivated me to think expansively and imaginatively of what education is and for. conceptualizing education as a way to build critical consciousness means that education is so much more than a degree. with the ways that language shapes people’s educational experiences, i find it necessary to pair my writing studies work with the insights and frameworks from education studies.

Okay, but like, who are you?

In addition to my professional passions and pursuits, the activities I regularly engage in have helped, and continue to, shape who I am. Here’s a snapshot of some of the activities that bring me joy.

Music

Whether it’s singing, writing lyrics, or simply listening to music, I’m always at peace knowing I have music in my life. The healing powers of music and the deep connections that are fostered through music are things I find so incredibly special. This is a photo from a 2019 concert of the band, wet, for their album, still run.

Photography

Taking and editing pictures has been a hobby since I was a kid. Photography has been a really enjoyable way to document places I explore and create everyday art out of the way I see the world and things surrounding me. Unless otherwise noted, the photos you’ll see on this site were taken by me!

Reading

Ever since I was a kid, reading was my escape. But while I was in college, I struggled to read for pleasure amidst all my school reading assignments. Now, I have a yearly reading goal and am having fun exploring new genres or trying out audiobooks. My favorite books will always be LGBTQ+ Romance!
