In this essay, I share some of the existing literature in discourse studies that pertain to discourses of romance. Although these texts don’t explicitly establish a clear definition of what romance is, I’ve found several themes from what I’ll consider “romance-related discourses”: the use of interpretative repertoires in analytical approaches, romance as an arena for enacting gender practices, and the shift towards analyzing the romance-related discourses that occur within digital spaces.
Combining personal reflection, collective discussion prompts and responses, interactive materials, and resources, I created a digital portfolio as a final project for the course "Ideology, Politics, and Power," in Winter 2023.
In this essay, I consider identity through the particular lens of disability in higher education. Focusing on the rhetorics surrounding disability within higher education, I articulate that liberal modes of inclusion fail to fully support disabled students and a critical approach is necessary to remove structural barriers within universities that prohibit students from succeeding.
By articulating how the syllabus as a rhetorical device upholds structures of dominance, I raise the point that it isn't just the content of a course that matters but also the delivery of that content and the cultivation of space in which that delivery occurs.
A multimodal project on the topic of friendship and its meaningfulness that seeks to encourage audiences to work towards cultivating a culture that values friendship and all its benefits more openly and wholeheartedly.
Using the zine format, I present my personal educational experiences, incorporating instructor interviews and an application of different forms of curricula, highlight the ways in which the education system’s emphasis on outcomes conflicts with the ideas of education as a means for growth and development.
Facilitating virtual roundtable discussions, writing a short material culture analysis essay, and designing the newsletter's layout, I was the editor of the Winter Quarter 2021 issue of the American Studies Program Newsletter.
